Fiona left school and started her career in The Boots Company’s manufacturing facility with over 3,000 employees, as a trainee in the personnel department gaining her first exposure to ER issues, welfare and working with Trade Unions. Fiona was promoted to an HR Officer role in Boot’s newly opened distribution centre where she had her first experience of a stand-alone HR role. Fiona moved on from Boots to SKY Television in a role that focussed on recruitment and from there she decided to specialise in training and development and moved into retail to facilitate this.
She then moved into a recruitment role with Motorola gaining invaluable experience of behavioural profiling and high volume recruitment as well as specialist difficult to fill positions which involved working with recruitment agencies across the UK to bring specialist skills to the Scottish plant.
Fiona moved on to Levi Strauss’ manufacturing facility in Whitburn as HR Manager. This gave Fiona exposure to some complex ER issues involving trade union negotiations to resolve. In addition, as part of the European HR team Fiona was involved in plant closures across Europe as the organisation restructured their manufacturing facilities to move out of Europe and into Tunisia and Malta.
For the next 6 years Fiona worked in a variety of senior roles within the call centre industry, leading HR, Training and Payroll teams to deliver within demanding and often complex structures. As well as this Fiona interpreted global initiatives into UK compliant initiatives and implemented strategies in areas such as employee and trade union consultation/employee relations, policy development and implemented leadership development initiatives through online, self-learning and workshops. Fiona also led recruitment teams involved in high volume recruitment and was also responsible for executive search for board level and senior sales and operational appointments.
Fiona then took some time out to support her daughter going to high school and joined BP Oil UK in a temporary role as Lead HR Advisor responsible for HR across multiple BP Express Shopping sites in Scotland. In this role as well as providing day to day HR support, Fiona led several TUPE consultation exercises moving service stations in and out of the BP network. Fiona designed and ran assessment centres to recruit management teams for the new M&S sites as they opened across Scotland. This involved assessing internal as well as external candidates and liaising with recruitment agencies.
When this role ended, Fiona then moved to The Xact Group and was promoted to head up the HR team responsible for delivering HR solutions to SME’s throughout the UK including Northern Ireland and ROI. In this role Fiona managed a complex case load including appeals, sickness absence management, performance management, introducing appraisal schemes, designed competency frameworks, disciplinary issues, grievances, settlement agreements, etc. Fiona also designed and delivered training and development activities to multiple organisations throughout the UK to support change and restructure activities as well as workshops to develop line managers people management skills in areas such as performance management, recruitment, appraisal and absence management. In addition Fiona drafted and kept contracts of employment and employee handbooks up to date for clients.
