In many industries (it could be argued not all, but really, most), it is essential to your growth and success that your employees know and understand what they are doing and why. People work differently from machines, and we need to cater for that, so let me explain why you need to keep training alive.

1. Things change, the world changes, so you should too

Few things are done consistently, exactly the same, for long periods of time. We operate in a fast moving information age where people need to know what’s going on and why (more on that later). So with so much information out there, we have to evolve as businesses and we simply cannot do that if our employees aren’t trained! Keep yourself and your staff on the cutting edge of your industry and let yourself stand out from competitors.

2. Improve efficiency by improving your talent

I know personally, if I know what I’m doing, I work quite a bit faster. I’m pretty confident that I’m not the only one, in fact, I know I’m not! People like to know what their doing, help your staff understand their job and therefor give them the ability to do it with greater skill and efficiency. You could see drops in accidents/errors/production time, and many other brilliant benefits if you simply take the time to ensure staff know what they are doing.

3. Help staff make it their own

We like to own things; we like to have our own areas of control and power. To some extent you can do that through job titles, and job descriptions, but you need to actually give people something to work with.

We often find that people who are well trained in what they do develop a greater passion for what they do, they start to actually like their job!

I’m pretty sure I don’t need to go into the details of how beneficial this it, but lets overview:

We take more care over they things we love and enjoy – So you should see a better quality of work ethic.

• People always try to grow themselves in the areas they love – Your staff will find the time to train themselves in the small things, keeping you competitive and at the cutting edge.

• Passion is infectious – It may not work on all staff, but if a few become more passionate, it will spread through the workplace and you’ll see improvements where you didn’t even expect them.

• They are people – Surely you’re happier when your staff are happier?

4. This is the information age

I mentioned before that we live in an information age, so lets act like it! Keep your staff informed of the latest trends, get them on twitter/relevant social media channel for your industry, and give them the opportunity to see what is working and failing within the industry. People now have a wealth of access to information via the internet, and now expect to be able to access all the information they need. We, as employers, need to feed that, and let our employees grow.

5. Retention

This one is simple, and surely obvious, but a surprising number of businesses are just not doing it so it’s worth mentioning.

People will stay with you if you are developing them in the areas they need developing. We, as humans, like to learn, I know I’ve mentioned it twice now, but it’s so important you learn this. If someone feels they are learning and growing within an organisation, that’s like a 10% pay rise every year for most of us! It’s worth loads, and doesn’t need to cost the earth.

• 1/4 new hires will leave inside a 6 month period.

• Nearly 70% of organisations admit the cost of recruiting, hiring, training and overtime has a significant financial impact.
